After 8 years, and 6 motorcycles.. finally the time has arrived. It must be a cakewalk for most hardcore bikers, but for someone like my levels of activity, one of the most grueling tests of body and mind.

Preparations have begun for D-day ( Departure day ). When this Raider embarks to take the name of Raid101 to the highest motor able passes in the world.

As of now preparations done -

    1) Saddle bags and trail bag for luggage

    2) Backpack, incase there are extra things to carry

    3) Gloves, Balaclava

    4) My riding jacket has been washed.. Smelling jasmine fresh as it dries in the living room

    5) Helmet visor has been cleaned and checked for scratches, none observed. Liner, Cheek pads have been given a thorough wash in the Washing machine.

    6) Bike is running good, however needs an oil change ( Actually I need it more than her ), changing her from semi synth to fully synth before I leave.

    7) Equipment list is being chalked out. Need Knee guards and some decent riding pants if I find any.

Things to do in the next 48 hrs -

    1) Bike service, plus chain plus buy chain lube, cables, levers etc.
    2) Buy knee guards + riding pants, bungee cords, nylon rope, puncture kit, and a lot more stuff.
    3) Test bike with complete complement of Luggage!
    4) Stickering job - If done properly, will surely share here with everyone.
    5) Ride till Chandigarh to rendezvous with the gang on the 19th morning.
    6) Get a haircut - Lol.

The Bike - KTM Duke 200. Most of you would know this was a recent purchase, with one target in mind. To take to Leh if the oppotunity arose. Well so it has.

Bike briefing - Done around 2500 kms, No niggles naggles till now. She has a tendency to stall when the clutch is pressed from time to time, other than that, she has been a hoot and a half. Good solid rims, can take a lot of abuse.
The front brake has a lot of bite, and the tyres have a lot of grip. Very very inspiring.

Though she runs out of steam very fast, her ideal zone is 100-110 kmph all day. Any slow and you get bored, and any faster and you feel you are pushing it.

The longest I have done on her in one day is around 170-190 kms of local bike riding. So the first ride from Gurgaon to Chandigarh is going to be a major test in itself for the bike as well as for my bum. :p

The only maintenance that she needs is a chain clean every 300-400 kms, and for it to be lubed. Looking at the itenary, I feel this would be carried out atleast 7-8 times.

Other than that, I am relying on the amazing low end grunt of the engine/gearbox to pull me out of tight situations.

More on this as the work progresses in the morning.

Best of luck JD666. Please be wary of the road to Leh/Ladakh as I have read on HV Kumar's FB Page that the rims of the duke are prone to damage due to the terrain there. Someone was stuck midway as his rim had been damaged beyond repair and he had to wait for a new rim to arrive from Delhi. Other than this, you should be good.

Also, I hope you're enabling mobile tracking on your phone. It does help pacify those who care about you. If you're using google latitude, pass on your details (via pm) so that I too can keep a track of you ;)

With a satellite phone I'll get arrested in no time, and that too in J&K no thank you.

The bike is getting her due. A change of oil to fully synthetic, air filter, spark plug. Thankfully I got all the parts I needed so currently taking clutch lever, clutch cable, throttle cable, brake lever (foot), gear lever, and a fuel filter.

The chain has been cleaned and lubed, now am getting the feeling that yes there is some preparation going on and I am about to embark on something great.

Met the service engineer for KTM, he knew about the rim issue.

Apparently he has been tracking everyone who has gone on a ktm.

That dude hit a pothole at like 65+ kmph.
    Fingers crossed.

Need to buy filter paper from a stationary store.

Next stop riding gear store and then to fbd.

Loads of it. Carrying a Leatherman, compass in my watch and in my cell. Magnetic :p

Though the roads are pretty simple, you can either go uphill or downhill: p
