    From wikipedia - "
A vivarium (Latin, literally for "place of life"; plural: vivaria or vivariums) is an area, usually enclosed, for keeping and raising animals or plants for observation or research. Often, a portion of the ecosystem for a particular species is simulated on a smaller scale, with controls for environmental conditions.
A vivarium may be small enough to sit on a desk or table, such as a terrarium or an aquarium, or may be a very large structure, possibly outdoors. Large vivaria, particularly those holding organisms capable of flight, typically include some sort of a dual-door mechanism such as a sally port for entry and exit, so that the outer door can be closed to prevent escape before the inner door is opened."

A terrarium is a plant eco system only. No other living beings/animals are present in it.

After nearly 3 months of getting it right, Finally the Terrarium in our house has stabilized, and is self sustaining. Here are some pics -

This is our old 600 Litre Fish tank, that developed a leak somewhere.

That is condensation on the glass and on the leaves of the plants

This was not set up by me. However I can put interested people in touch with the person who set it up (my Jija ji ( Sister's Husband )). First the bottom layer was collected and spread out evenly.
Hard plants, that resist and survive harsh climates were selected for putting up inside. After about 2 weeks, a fixed amount of water was put in, and the tank was sealed, with minimum openings in the clingfilm for air.

Right now it is self sustaining, and requires some maintenance from time to time.

Im sure this was pretty unique, so wanted to share with everyone, and show the hardwork that has gone in making this. :)

You do not have any insects/animals in there? I'd add atleast a couple to complete this setup and provide "natural" carbon dioxide to the plants, as the one from outside the tank isn't natural with respect to the ecosystem inside.

You can later also add a water body and then completely seal of the tank and it should sustain on it's own.

I think the build up of bacteria/mulch was done initially to provide that. However there are small holes in the top for circulation ( CO2 being heavier than air should be automatically available from the top ). And the plant life is doing pretty well without any further insects/animals.

What I meant was to truly have the terrarium sustain itself, replenishing CO2 from outside is cheating :p

And I'm pretty sure not many would have gotten around to this much even. :p

    I'm talking from experience :p

I've made two terrariums for school projects, man the education here in India truly sucks.
