To keep it simple - i10 Sportz in petrol and Beat TDCI in diesel. fits the budget, and will offer good performance and operation overall. Any particular vehiclez you got in mind?? we all can always discuss the pros and cons.

by sportz I am referring to the 1.2 Litre engine. Not the 1.1. And We got one last year for around 4.4-4.5L

^^ Then other fuel efficient alternates would be the Zen Estilo ( which I am sure would be below 4L ), The WagonR would be on the higher side.

A not so peppy, however fuel efficient and feature packed option would be the Magna + Eon ( got one a couple of months back for mom ). Sluggish yes, fuel efficient, comfortable and great A/C - Also yes.

^^ Spacious, stable on the highway, and one of my fav cars purely for the looks. Sadly there is an upgrade lined up, and the diesel is not available readily ( long booking period )

Well then there would be plenty of choices. I've seen even Polo's going as low as 4.3 round about, as also a couple of lower spec'd early i20's but those ones are a bit down on the driveability and are underpowered
