And what an experience it was. I did share this earlier on my FB profile, but then realised not all are there to view these pics. The Shanghai Maglev is currently the only one of its kind in existence in the world. Built to demonstrate the feasibility of commercial application of Magnetic levitation in Trains. It was earlier planned to link Shanghai to Beijing, a distance of 1300 kms ( similar to Delhi-Mumbai ) with a super fast link with trains running at 400+ kmph continuously. The current fast trains run at 300 Kmph, and the slightly slower ones at 250 Kmph which is fast compared to the 135 Kmph that our Indian trains hit. However later the project was scrapped, and they built a 30 Km long stretch from the Airport to Longshan Road. Which is covered in approximately 7 minutes flat.and takes 50 seconds longer if you are travelling during the 'slower' 300 kmph speed. Imagine a destination 30 kms away ( For eg those in NCR, think about coming to Gurgaon from NP, those in BLR think about reaching the airport from the city, in Mumbai, I am guessing Central to Borivali?) And covering that distance in 7 minutes!!! There are two speeds that it operates at during different times of the day. during peak hours it reaches 431 kmph, otherwise speed is restricted to 300 kmph. The 431 Kmph top speed makes it the fastest commercial train in operation, in the world! Some pics - The station. When the train is at the station it is touching the ground. Once its ready to leave the station, and the doors are closed, you can feel it lift slightly off the ground. There is a noticeable change. The speed build up is constant and aggressive. There are indicators on either side of a cabin, so that you can view the speed constantly. The below is a blurry shot of the train doing 430 kmph. It does shake a lot, but not more than what one would experience in an Indian train, the only difference being that you are doing 4 times the speed! Here's a clearer one at 411 Kmph The experience is unbelievable. You realise it only when you cross 170-180 kmph, that how fast the world is moving away from you, and everything is a blur. I have shot a video, which I'll upload to YT once I am back in India. It stays at 430-431 kmph for a matter of 20-30 seconds, and then starts slowing down again. But then it has to! Since at 430 kmph you are covering nearly 120 meters every second! Thats covering a football field length in less than a second! The train. Not too Aerodynamic for its speed, though the wedge like shape looks very Retro. The tracks that it never touches - If you are ever going to Shanghai, then I would recommend experiencing this 1.2 Billion Dollar marvel, and cherishing every moment of going faster than most human beings would ever get to experience.
