    • tried two of the passwords i used in the past

    • Length: 15 characters
    • Character Combinations: 55
    • Calculations Per Second: 4 billion
    • Possible Combinations: 127 septillion

    It would take a desktop PC about A billion years to crack your password





    • Length: 16 characters
    • Character Combinations: 51
    • Calculations Per Second: 4 billion
    • Possible Combinations: 2 octillion

    It would take a desktop PC about 16 billion years to crack your password

    And that is not how crackers crack passwords anyway.

    Firstly no one will use one single computer. They will use mutliple computer simultaneously like on cloud or something. They exploit the vulnerabilies in system rather than going on good old brute forcing.
    Then they work on guess work, personal information etc as guess work. They first get your password files from the servers if they really want to crack your password.
    Attacking server directly with password will not work at all, Gmail, yahoo mail or most companies are fvcking fortresses.

    so the exploit happens from the inside out rather than outside in?

    It is not quite that simple, but if there is a problem it will be explioted. Crackers are after zero day exploit.
