I need to make a HTPC asap.

No, it is not a HTPC.

It is going to be kind of ghetto setup which shall be relegated to HTPC duties in near future.

Budget for all including Monitor - 320$.

I do not care if I do not get a discreet GPU.

I do not care if I get a 19" Monitor.

In short, my OCD to have a Rig built with my hands is getting to my nerves.

I cannot stand to type on a Laptop.

Since I am tight with money till sometime, I was thinking to get a HTPC built which can serve me as a powerful enough Rig for *light* Gaming and Programming and media playback duties.

I can relegate it as a HTPC once I decide on my future Rig.

    Someone there, has any plans.

I am terribly outpaced by the speed at which core components have moved technologically.

    Suggestions please.

If someone is wondering why am I doing this craziness?

Well, for 320$ the laptops you get are like krap.

For the same money, an equivalent desktop shall be a lot lot powerful and more VFM.

As an added bonus, a PC is joy to tinker with. A laptop is a device from Hell.

Amd rig, possibly a tri core that can be unlocked on a suitable board. Wi-Fi, on board graphics but with HD audio out thru HDMI. lemme scout around and come up with something

I was thinking a prev generation Richland AMD 10 6800k APU. That is 100$ for CPU+GPU.
If I add 8GB decent RAM, add another 85$.

I can perhaps squeeze in a Mobo and PSU for 100$.

Another 35$ left for HDD :(.

    Monitor is still not in.

Good news, i3 4340 3.6Ghz 1150 costs mere 99$ here in nearby Brooklyn NYC. Holy shit, that processor can kick AMD everywhere except in iGPU. Will be plenty of horsepower for my work. And can work as a HTPC/hackintosh rig on retirement.

Gonna pair it with a cheap microATX 1150 starter board for $50 more.

    Now, a cheap PSU for 35$, a used 1600 Mhz 8GB DDR3 Memory for 60$ and I am set.

    Total 250$. Yay :)

Now if I can get a decent IPS monitor for 150$.

CM stealth Quickfire for 65$ shipped used I have access to, @MOZ hows the deal?

PS:- How do I tag people?

That is a good deal if it is a CM QF Rapid. How old is the keyboard and what switches? Try to get a good idea of the condition of the keyboard.

Good condition CM QFR can be had for most switch types except greens for round the same price or cheaper on GH.

The newer operating systems use multiple cores. Go with quad if possible. True quad.

Ok so apparently for 20$ I can get 8GB of Crucial ballastic puppies, in sets of 2x2GB and 4GB.

Weird I know, but man 2x2GB kit can do 8-8-8-24. But anyway timings are pointless as any half decent practical person would know.

Still, 20$ is not bad .... eh :D.

Thinking I should take the bait.

Yep. More GBs better than tighter timings. 4x2 (2 sticks of 4GB each) would be perfect imo.

It's not bad, plenty of people that like linear switches love it, I don't like linear switches, because I am a tactile switches person, I like tactile feedback, as well as audible.

Again, my recommendation would be to somehow go to a store and try out a couple of switches. Where are you located, I could try to get a friend in the vicinity to send you some sample switches/board.
