Was adding up some numbers today, and even though there's a calculator in the drawer, my hand instinctively went for my Phone. And that's when the idea of this thread came!

Some of the items I found

    1) - Alarm clocks

    Alarm Clock.jpg

Though I still cherish my Casio Alarm clock on my bedside (the model above), rarely have I set an alarm on it to wake up. It's been my mobile always!

These were a standard accessory on any bedside about a dozen years ago, but are now seen in Watch shops only. Rarely does anyone buy em now.

    2) - Wrist Watches -

Though not everyone has started doing it. But I do see most people not wearing watches and referring to their cell phones for the time. Generally they are always staring at their phones, thanks to WhatsApp and Facebook, so the need to glance at your wrist for the time, is an option for select few.

    3) Wall calendars -

Once a Standard in every household, these are no longer seen anywhere. Be it the desktop kind or the pocket kind.

We have run out of these -

    Calendar 01.jpg

    And these -

    Calendar 02.jpg

But I'm pretty sure will still have space on our walls for these :D

    4) Land Line phones -

    land line phone.jpg

Chandigarh became the first City in India to have more mobile phones than Land lines. I think the rest of the nation followed pretty soon. Slow but steadily these phones have been dying and have been replaced by mobile phones, and more mobile phones when needed.

Offices still use them, but from personal or day to day use, their use has been absolute zero. Probably just as an addition to the internet connection in our homes.

    5) Cameras -

    camera.jpg

Now people use their cell phones to click mostly everything around them. Unless you are still on a BlackBerry or a laggy Android device. They prefer carrying huge DSLRs in addition to whenever they travel, and end up reverting to the cell phone, coz it's just that much more convenient :D

Gone are the days when one would take the camera out from the cabinet, make sure it has film and battery, and then take some precious shots since the number of clicks were limited. I remember Birthday parties with one roll of film (31-32 shots if you were lucky). A recent Birthday party in the house, was over 200 clicks! But then that's the advent of Digital Cameras as well, not just Cell Phones.

Cell phones are exclusively for selfies :D

Some of the things that I could think of right now. What all has a cell phone replaced for you?

    Post with images please

On an average we take more images from our cell phones rather than a dedicated camera.

Print newspapers do shoddy editing .. and put up all kinds of BS stories any how.

Note pads - Hardly see em around, though i still feel the right way to make a list is on a sheet of paper with a pen.

    MP3 players, Discmans, Walkman -

Earlier it used to be so cool walking around with one of these clasped to your belt. Sadly don't see em around anymore. Hardly anyone uses a dedicated media player. Mostly (including the i brigade) use their cell phones with a decent headphone for music.

With the launch of the 6210 Phone, Nokia transformed our phones into map and navigation devices as well. There were earlier attempts as well, however this was the first dedicated phone with a built-in GPS receiver for real time and accurate navigation.

However it has replaced this for sure -

I remember as a kid buying road maps whenever the family would go on a road trip and then track our progress on the map. Sigh, those were fun times for sure!

More than .. asking people for directions ..

Even if you arrive in a new city .. you just need to know the Address and Landmark .. and voila Google Maps has you on your way.
The Public Transit feature is pretty darn amazing .. i've seen it work in metros don't know how well other cities are covered.

Not much to be honest, call me old skool if you will.

    I still prefer:
    1. A wristwatch, infact if you know me well enough, you'd know my watch never (As in never ever) comes off
    2. A camera is irreplaceable, I hate phone camera. Bleh
    3. MP3 players, yet to find any phone with decent audio
    4. Still rocking newspapers every morning and monthlies

These are some of the things people have mentioned that phones have replaced.

but Mp3 players have become a niche with the advent of cheap MP3-supported Smartphones.
Even 2-3k Samsung or Nokia phones have mp3 & camera.

Given the overall market it would be wiser to say that feature has become more accessible to the average crowd ..

Now pretty much everyone can listen to mp3, click photos , browse the web.
