Linux is a kernel(or operating system) started as free and open source project meant for creating a unix-like operating system. Linux is a full fledged operating system when ported with GNU user utlity, official it is called GNU/Linux. There are many distribution of GNU/Linux, most of them are free and few are commercial. Linux performs very well for requirements like servers, data centres, high performance computing, embedded devices and super computer etc.
No, I think it's a good start. And I don't no question is trivial or noobish. [private]Sir, yes sir[/private]
I have uBuntu running as a VM on my PC through vmware and also through Oracle VM Virtualbox !! I seem to get lost other thn checking my sites and other things. the errors and installations keep me amused !
the best way to go about installation is through command line. few cons: 1. steep learning curve 2. intimidating 3. hard to get it right few pros: 1. extremly fast 2. you can debug to no length 3.configuration is pretty much in your hands.
I will seriously give it all that is required !! ( I have a secret admiration and love for Linux ) but you will have to teach me !! as I can do pretty much all I can through the GUI except debugging. I am using it for many years now !! and yet nobody knows that
actually, Linux wants it's user to be bit educated about how it works. I am not sure how much you know but this site gives a good info on starting out: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Linux_For_Newbies/Command_Line
Well I am bookmarking this right now !! will find time and then report to you ! Thanks.. --- Post Merged: Jun 27, 2012 2:30 PM --- Perhaps, you could make a 101 about Linux ?? like what it is, how is it sdifferent, what are the various versions available, how and why is command line used ?? etc, etc.. in a nutshell that would be superb !!
I can do that, but there is so much info available online that it will be waste. OTOH, i can try to find good links and make a kind ot tutorial thread of all the compilation of link.
YES that is what I wanted but not now, we have too much on our plates !! I can't afford tyo see you away for even 4 hours
same here.. been about a month now btw, I have a dell netbook ( atom single core, 1 gb ddr2, 16gb ssd ). Currently runs windows 7 ultimate without much of a lag. If I switch to ubuntu or some other linux OS, will it help with the speed? Requirements - Browsing, chatting ( it has a webcam, but dies on google + , the lappy speed cant handle it ), downloading and watching movies ( no HD stuff, just regular 700mb ones ).
Don't go with Gnome3, it's horrible try Linux mint with Gnome2. or better try Xbuntu or any other distribution with XFCE. XFCE is lightening fast, amazingly clean desktop.
I don't like it much to be blunt, it has never worked for me because I don't have good hardware to support it. However people like KDE very much and new KDE is way better than new Gnome.
