India keeps talking about Dual Citizenship .. Any day now << been hearing that for 10+ years. And for me this seriously matters I am eligible for Polish/EU citizenship, but didn't take that since India doesn't allow me to have dual citizenship. Doesn't matter anyways since I have Permanent Residency there, which only requires me to show up once every 10 years. Also it's valid for all Schengen countries. Previous to that I had a US Green Card, but that expires if you're not residing in the US for atleast 6 months/year But I was born in Brazil, so had a Brazilian passport till I had to give it up for an Indian Passport, (that I needed to buy property here - Goa) So.. no I wasn't a PIO when I came here last year.. but was in the past. I was eligible for either of PIO or OCI. Both are essentially the same.. Both work as a Indian Residency card. (They're supposed to merge them sometime) Only difference is I could get either PIO or OCI, since I had a Indian passport before. But Ania is only eligible for (and is) a PIO. Kinda stupid.. calling her a "Overseas Citizen of India" is still acceptable.. But calling her a "Person of Indian Origin" is plain idiotic! In any case, her PIO card (more like a passport really) is valid for 15 years, but she's eligible for Indian Citizenship in 7 years. Again doesn't matter unless India does something about the Dual Citizenship that they keep talking about
So Ania becomes from PIO to Citizen in 7 years .. loses her Polish nationality. But if you have an Indian Passport you're an India citizen .. can you vote/get a voters ID card ?
Yes.. I can vote. She cannot. Probably the only major difference between PIO and Citizenship. PIOs also can't buy agricultural land Yes.. as it stands, she'll have to give up her Polish/EU passport. So, obviously, she won't be taking the Indian citizenship. We'd rather each hold a different citizenship.
LOL.. you don't know the half of it Dad was a UN Diplomat.. so you really don't want me to start listing the different countries I grew up as a kid in
and listing the different kind of........ well, you are a married man anything i say can be used against you, so i will spare you in the name of religious institution of marriage etc.
So both of are married but hold the nationality of different countries .... She'll be Polish, you'll be Indian .. What civil laws will you follow ??
