Matheran is a Hill Station and a municipal council in the Raigad district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is a hill station in Karjat Tahsil and is also the smallest hill station in India. It is located on the Western Ghats range at an elevation of around 800 m (2,625 feet) above sea level. It is located around 90 km from Mumbai, and 120 km from Pune. Matheran's proximity to many metropolitan cities makes it a popular weekend getaway for urban residents. The name Matheran means "forest on the forehead" (of the mountains).

Matheran is an eco-sensitive region, declared by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India. It is Asia's only automobile-free hill station. Because of vehicles being banned in Matheran, the place is quite peaceful despite the thousands of visitors coming to visit throughout the year.

There are lots of lookout points that provide spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Matheran has a reasonably dense forest cover.

    Starting Point: Baner, PUNE
    Departure: June 28, 12:15 PM

    Distance: 111 KMs

Destination: Matheran Taxi Stand (Dasturi Gate)
    Arrival: 17:00 PM

    Bikes:
    1. Pulsar 220
    2. Honda Unicorn
    3. Bajaj Glamour

    Travellers: 6

To go further back, I actually started from Hyderabad on Thursday night, an over-night bus to Pune which dropped me off at 9am. Few hours to regroup and repack all the essentials for the trip, we started just after noon at 12:15 PM .. (about an hour later than planned). Turning ON the ignition at Baner, Pune .. we had to travel approx. 111 KMs by road along Pune Highway (NH4) onto Mumbai-Pune Expressway and then taking the dirt-broken path of Karjat Khopoli Marg.

June is rainy month and the ghats along the way perpetually under showers. Most of the bike ride just after entering the NH4 was washed out with everything from light drizzles to piercing rain.

Matheran as described earlier is declared as an eco-sensitive zone, which means that no vehicles are allowed to operate inside it. Its is pretty much a dense jungle on all sides and lodges etc are built around the tiny Train Station along a single stretch of road which is less than 1 KM long. There are many lodges, hotel nothing too fancy or luxurious.
Walking around Main Street of Matheran you'll see lots of Horses n Monkeys. The primates are really menacing and will try to snatch whatever you are eating out of your hand. The place really is devoid of any kind of motor vehicles everyone walks about or takes the horseback.
