A meteorite shower has crash landed across Russia's Ural region, injuring over 250 people and damaging buildings in six cities. Residents in Chelyabinsk reported shaking ground, windows shattering and car alarms going off as the rocks fell to Earth. Officials in the country say that the shower began after a larger meteor disintegrated in the lower atmosphere, causing the fragments to wreak the (currently) non-lethal havoc. If you'd like to compare how wrong (or right) Michael Bay got it in Armageddon, head on past the break for some footage.

Wow man! that was something... I can only imagine how it would have been for the people there..

BTW if any managed to get their hands on any remnants of the meteor, they could get pretty damn rich!

    From Gizmodo -

The Russian Academy of Sciences has estimated that the meteorite weighed about 10 tons and entered the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of at least 33,000 mph, shattering about 18-32 miles above ground.

What's more incredible: unconfirmed reports say that an air defense unit fired a missile as the meteor entered Russian airspace at supersonic speeds, shattering it to pieces. I find this hard to believe, as I doubt their air defense had the time to detect and target an object that appeared out of nowhere, from space. There's also one single trail. If a missile actually hit anything, there would be multiple trails following the debris.
More likely, the meteor exploded before hitting the ground because of the enormous heat generated by the compression of air in front of the meteor or asteroid. This phenomenon is called asteroid airburst or bolide.

The Air defense system theories are BS .. hitting something that almost 30,000 mph is way beyond any rocket propelled munition ..

I was just wondering, if there had been any aircraft in the vicinity ( ~ 25 kms in any direction ), it would have been knocked out of the sky, which would have been disastrous had this happened over a populated area.
