MICROSOFT BUYS PERCEPTIVE PIXEL'S TOUCH TECHNOLOGY Microsoft has acquired Perceptive Pixel, a company engaged in the touch display technology. The acquisition will give Microsoft access to Perceptive Pixel’s software and hardware touch technology; including the 82-inch display panel with 100 simultaneous touch points. MICROSOFT ACQUIRES PERCEPTIVE PIXEL Perceptive Pixel has exhibited some cool multitouch displays in the past and Microsoft has been following they work. At the Windows 8 unveiling Microsoft even demonstrated touch integration in Windows 8 on Perceptive Pixel’s 82-inch prototype display. But Microsoft wants it all, it seems. They have now acquired Perceptive Pixel and will gain access to years of research, development and production of multitouch display technology. Steve Ballmer calls Perceptive Pixel’s technology “fairly revolutionary” but also says that a lot of work has to be done before consumers can get their hands on this kind of technology at reasonable prices. The 82-inch screen is described as a white board and video conferencing system but Microsoft also says that Perceptive Pixel’s large touch displays will enable “powerful Windows 8-based PCs and open new possibilities for productivity and collaboration”. Let us see where this takes us in a few years from now. Source : http://flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1342001289
In short, longer meetings can now be enjoyed by looking at an 82 inch tv. --- Double Post Merged, Jul 16, 2012 --- PS: now when Windoze crashes, you bet your @$$ you are goin to poke your Pc to death.
What ever MS makes has to able to sell itself in huge volumes .. Correct me if I am wrong but MS doesnt make niche products.
This is a corporate product... for now atleast. Corporations, hotels etc. Same group that MS targeted to sell their Table (MS Surface) to. In the long run however, it might be suitable for home users. Remember this: Microsoft Surface:
For Enterprise solutions MS is still behind other major players like CISCO etc There are cheaper ways to do this with a projector and external touch-panel.
Seriously.. If you were a corporate buyer... CHEAP isn't what you're after. Price/Performance is. And this will justify it's price in the prestige factor alone.
This doesnt justify cost .. becoz its not available presently and still take a year atleast .. Maybe this is useful for R&D and certain & I dunno certain Scientific Applications but for Corporate work I dont see practicality vs cost benefit.
