While playing quake, I have to lift my mouse quite a lot especially when i have to take sharp turns in the same direction which i was navigating previously. This lifting may be bit crucial when \I am targeting someone with rail or any other zero delay weapons. I was wondering lifting mouse for fast maneuver is common or do I need to change mouse setting and get a mouse pad (if at all that will help)

Change mouse. You need a higher resolution mouse and a Good mouse pad.

dbg : he uses logitech MX518.

i think u havent set the DPI setting. Set it to max i.e. 1600 DPI and u will see the difference. It will take a little while to adjust with the high resolution, but u will be okay soon.
And yes, get a decent gaming pad too !

Lift Off Distance does not depend on mouse resolution...

It depends on the mouse sensor!

for fps games, 450 dpi and 500 mhz is more than enough!

lift off distance is a physical attribute..

Mouse resolution is a logical attribute...

more dpi==more screen shots per movement cycle, which translates into a smoother movement, yielding a higher speed!

More DPI = More pixels the cursor will move with per inch of the mouse movement = lesser mouse movement to cover the same screen area = lesser lift off distance

correct me if i am wrong !

More DPI means a higher resolution screenshot thus more accurate motion tracking.

DPI increases accuracy ,polling rate affects the response.

For low sensitive gamers - Low DPI & high polling rate.

For high sensitivity gamers - higher DPI & lower polling rate will do.

Correct except the lesser lift off distance .. coz it doesnt depend on DPI but on the type of sensor.
Laser mouse have been known to have a pretty high lift-off distance.

Optical mouse have minimum liftoff distance ..

Since this is linux, I donno if I even know how to change or know the dpis for the mouse? As I understand correctly, it generally defaults to 1600.
And I am not using any mousepad, I am just using the table.

Get a mouse pad pronto .. better glide and you Mouse will have a longer life.

Logitech mouse let you change the DPI from the Mouse it self ..

Ok, there is a + and - button, but i always thought it was to change mouse sensitivity? mouse sensitivity is not the same thing as dpi?

Yes.. pretty much. High DPI = Higher Sensitivity.

The + & - buttons cycle through the preset DPI modes .. you should get the G400 .. 1000hz Polling will do you good since you play at low sensi.
