Already posted this on FB, but posting this here to get responses from the correct audience. I am building a new HTPC and needs suggestions on the config.

This system WILL NOT be used for gaming. Blue Monster 2 is still quite capable for that.

New build at home HTPC config - finalized .. any suggestions?

    1. Core i5 3570K
    2. ASUS P8Z77-I Deluxe - Mini ITX
    3. Corsair Vengeance 8 GB (2 x 4GB )
    4. Corsair CX500M Corsair TX650M
    5. Samsung 840 Pro series 128 GB SSD
    6. Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB
    7. Fractal Design Node 304 case

Just need to decide which HTPC keyboard/touchpad combo to get.

I need feedback on the PSU as I heard corsair CX series is not good. But it has awesome reviews on Amazon and Newegg.

    This is a media centre?
So, I am wondering if you really need too much computing power.
we have the set-up with a HP prolaint N40L, which costed about 200£(plus he got some rebate due to promotion)
He changed the graphics card with something as low end as 560 and we have 4TB raid using WDs.

Was going for a i3 but then someone convinced me to get the i5. Better to future proof as i5 is just 30 bucks more than the i3 at the micro center.

I am wondering what is the budget here, I would think you wont spend more than 300$ on this thing?

I never do things with a budget. This is already touching 1000 USD. When i do plan a budget, i always miss it. So i chucked the concept entirely, long time back.

point is that for HTPC, you may not really require too much computing power.

    i5 seems fine
get a basic gfx card like 560.
    not much ram
you may rather spend on more storage.
    SSD would be an overkill.
I think you already have sound equipments amps, cards, speakers etc.

He is using XBMC and SSD will not be an overkill, some of the better themes really do exhaust the HHD.

    Throw in a 560, and replace the CX500 with a TX650.

And get as many HDD as possible, the WD Caviar Green is an excellent choice, and don't RAID as chance of data loss is higher and you only need them as storaga devices so speed isn't a priority.

Now for a remote, there is no one great choice out there. What level of ease do you want, if a lot, I would suggest get something from the Logitech Harmony series. Then there is the Boxee remote, and Rii remote. What I would suggest though is to use an iOS or Android device and use their (XBMC) remote, which is excellent if you have your library sorted. ^ thanks man ... no GPU for now (want minimal carbon footprint). I can always add one later if i think the system is lacking. That is why i am not going for those extra slim cases. Let me check the TX series. But i thought that TX are not modular. I want a modular for sure as in a small cabinet, the cable management will be a b1tch.

I already have a 2 TB with me and with this new 2 TB coming in, i won't be having space issues on the HTPC for a good amount of time. I generally delete stuff that i have seen. Gaming rig already has additional 3 TB for my anime and songs (don't need them on the HTPC).

Anuz sir, the price is already 850 USD without any discreet GPU. I think you are not aware of the current prices of the components that i have listed. Most of those are essential components.

    Modular - HX series

GPU - Not required if not gaming. HD4000 chip on i5 3570k is more than enough to play HD content flawlessly.

^ Yeah .. but the CX500M is also modular and WAYYYY cheaper than the HX series. My gaming rig has the HX one as it definitely demanded a HX :).

Simple question, is the CX500M a decent enough PSU for the above stated config?

Reply fast as i am thinking of picking up the system today itself (locally).

and its not like that CX wont take load ... even CX 350/400 will run that system. But its CX part that worries me !

Agree with Sachin, as far as requirement would go, a good 350+ would do, but CX is not trustable and you want modular otherwise I would have suggested VX450.
