Airtel has already started the trend by hiking, or rather say doubling the call tariffs by 100%. Calling rates are now 2Rs per Minute compared to earlier 1 Rs per minutes.

They have also bumped up prices of recharge vouchers for special tariffs and services by 5-15 Rs across the range.

Idea is also planning the same, however the roll across across all their networks will take time. Airtel has started this currently in 4 networks.

So time to pay more for your calling, and no more freebies.

Actually calling here is probably the cheapest in the world, compared for each minute at actuals. However what propelled the growth of the cellphone in the second largest market in the world were the ultra low calling rates, and super cheap cell phones.

I guess now that we are hooked, there is no looking back, and the companies are free to hike and set the rate. :)

What's their reason behind this hike..? I dont remember TRAI hiking any of its rates.

Rs 2 per min is atrocious.

Higher operational costs, and lesser revenues!

more like Bharti Mittal threw all his cash at this Walmart venture and now he's feeling his empty pockets.

Hope Vodaphone stays clear of this mess

Call tariffs in India are one of the lowest in the world, what we need is a drop in data plan tariffs.

Even those are pretty low .. ~$5 for 1GB per month of 3G is pretty darn cheap as well compared to the west.

India has huge telecom subscriber base .. so Telecom Providers can make do with lower tariffs as they have comparatively large pool of customers.

3G is not cheap, even compared to the west.

As I said call tariffs are one of the cheapest in India, but same can't be said for data tariffs.
