    Almost all of us are on Facebook these days , but do all of us know how to protect our virtual presence in social networking site? Here is a basic guide to help protect your privacy on the most popular social networking site "facebook".


    The Basics

    Choosing audience for your posts

    When you update your status , upload a photo or post something , below you can find a button which says "friends" , this button is known as the audience selector tool , click on it and you can chose from here as to whom you want the post to be shared with.

    Controlling who can see contents of your timeline


    You can again use the audience selector button to change who can see stuffs posted on your Timeline. If you post something on some one else's timeline , they have the control to select the audience for that post.

    Limiting people from seeing old posts on your timeline

    1. Click [​IMG] at the top right of your Facebook page and choose Settings
    2. Select Privacy from the menu
    3. There you will find the Who can see my stuff? section, click Limit the audience for posts I've shared with friends of friends or Public?
    4. Click Limit Old Posts

    Selecting who can see your future posts -

    1. Click [​IMG] in the upper-right corner of your Facebook page.
    2. Select Settings from the drop down menu.
    3. Select Privacy .
    4. Chose the setting (Who can see your future posts?) and edit it

    Selecting who can send you friend requests -

    1. Click [​IMG] in the top right of your Facebook page and select Settings.
    2. Click Privacy.
    3. Click Edit next to Who can send you friend requests?
    4. Select an audience from the drop down menu to limit who can send you friend requests.

    Filtering messages on Facebook -


    1. Click on the messages icon and select See All at the bottom.
    2. Click on Others.
    3. Click Edit Preferences
    4. Select Basic or Strict filtering.
    5. Click Save

    Removing yourself from a photo you were tagged in -

    1. Go to your Timeline
    2. Click on Activity Log.
    3. Click Photos.
    4. Select the photos you'd like to remove a tag from
    5. Click Report/Remove Tags.
    6. Click Untag Photos.

    Controlling who sees tags and photos your are tagged in your timeline -

    1. Click [​IMG] at the top right of your Facebook page and select Settings
    2. Click Timeline and Tagging on your left
    3. Look for the setting Who can see posts you've been tagged in on your Timeline? and click Edit to the far right
    4. Choose an audience for the photos and tags from the drop down menu

    Turning off tag suggestions for photos of you -


    1. Click [​IMG] at the top right of your Facebook page and choose Settings
    2. Click Timeline and Tagging
    3. Under How can I manage tags people add and tagging suggestions?, click on Who sees tag suggestions when photos that look like you are uploaded?
    4. Choose an option from the drop down menu.

    Restricting facebook from linking your profile to search engines -

    1. Click [​IMG] at the top right of your Facebook page and choose Settings
    2. Click Privacy on your left
    3. Under Who can look me up ? , click on Edit next to Do you want other search engines to Link to your timeline , uncheck the box Let other search engines link to your profile.
    4. Close and exit page.
