I started using Nimbuzz 3-4 years back, and it was quite a nifty bit of software that allowed me to chat, call, send files etc.

I tried Whatsapp as well a couple of years ago, and liked the simplicity of the software, but din't like the fact that it kept on running in the background without my permission, and tried connecting to the internet every time possible ( Nokia N-8 )

Came 2012, and suddenly everyone I knew was on Whatsapp, when ages ago I used to tell them about how good Nimbuzz was as a cheap alternate to chatting etc.

Finally giving in, I installed Whatsapp as well on my cell phone.

But here are some arguments that still make me favor Nimbuzz.

Would like your inputs as well -

1- Nimbuzz allows you to chat with your FB, Yahoo, Gtalk, windows, skype etc etc contacts and also your Nimbuzz contacts (People who have Nimbuzz installed on their phones)

Whatsapp lets you do that with your phone contacts only.

2- Nimbuzz allows you to resize files before sending, so technically you can send an image file as is, without resizing, whereas Whatsapp does an auto resize for you.

3- Nimbuzz allows for free calling via 3G or Wi-Fi, to another Nimbuzz contact.

4- The ability to segregate your groups ( yahoo, gtalk, windows etc etc ), and chose to be online/offline on each one.

5- No constant connection search, or running in the background, when you shut down Nimbuzz, it shuts down.

6- According to a recent comparision Nimbuzz available on more platforms, than Whatsapp.

    Heres a link -

Compare feature: Google Talk, WhatsApp Messenger, Nimbuzz, PingChat! - Softonic

7- Most important for people like us - Nimbuzz is free, whereas Whatsapp is free for the first year only, and then 1$ after that. Nimbuzz counters this by showing ads, but then when has that deterred us :)

8- Nimbuzz allows one to buy Credits like Skype, and make cheap calls to phones/landlines anywhere in the world. I remember using it thru the Wi-Fi in my hotel for calling India, and it was pretty reasonable.

    So whats your take?

Whatsapp is pretty much free to .. I haven't paid a single cent in two years that i've used it.

Nimbuzz is IM Client .. which supports various IM networks whereas Whatsapp is has created it own IM network.

The biggest benefit of Whatsapp is that there is no form of registration, your phone number is your ID and as long as you retain your number you can switch between clients very easily.. This is the biggest reason for Whatsapp popularity .. just install the app and your the contacts who use whatapp are already configured without any steps.

Same thing with Nimbuzz as well. And whatsapp is going to be paid after 1st year of usage. If you've changed numbers, then its free for a year on the new number.

I don't know how, but the whatsapp on my BB was to expire in April 2013. They forced me to upgrade the client and when it restarted, it got renewed till April 2014, and no, I don't have any CC enabled on the BB App World so no question of me being charged!

To add to the comparo, Nimbuzz allows you to download a chat client software, that you can install and use on your PC/Laptop as well.

I checked WhatsApp site, no such software.

What's currently become more annoying is the auto back up feature of whatsapp. I do not want to back up any of my conversations. and there is no way I can cancel this useless feature.

Why in the world would I wanna back up conversations I don't wanna save in the first place! arrgh! WhatsApp is losing it for me.

Backuping up conversation is a needed feature, why woud that ever be a negative for an application.

There is so much data in my chats that is exchanged, its like saying you wouldn't have wanted a backup of your SMS's pre-smartphones.

exactly. Some people (me included) might not want that back up for the same reason. We don't want any data saved offline or offsite.
