Current system specs - - [email protected] at stock volts - 4gb ddr2 ( 2x2 ) Running CL4 at 960 mhz. - Abit iX38 QuadGT mobo - 5770 Crossfire - Currently running windows 7 x86. Plan? Have another high performance 4gb kit lying around and 2 spare slots. Want to upgrade to 8gb of RAM and then run x64 windows 7. Maybe do a RAID on the 2x500 gb ( 7200.12 ) hard drives that I have ( mirror ) for faster boot up / performance. No plans to upgrade until 2013 mid / end minimum.
Nope, dont think so, i just wanted to use the full 8 gigs of ram for future usage. and if there is any benefit. else I can just do a RAID setup on my existing installation.
All this too gibberish.. !! If you can listen to me, this is worthwhile only if your CPU supports full x64 bit instructins, which I think your cpu does not !! raid is useless.. unless you have a powerful cpu !! it takes a lot of cpu overhead.. where even a 5 tp 15% overhead matters.. ! RAM you can put in on 32 biut too and use that to fulfil your desires of running a full VM.. but I think your cpu does not support that too If that is true then you are fine !! otherwise, buy a SB based core i7 and be happy !! for another 3 or more years !
Well .. 64bit apps will use the full RAM .. 32bit apps will just run on 32bit mode. Do the RAID , definitely.
the normal 7200.12s have a read / write speed of between 50-60 mbps. If under raid ( striped ) it doubles up ( 100-120 mbps ), Under raid mirror it should go up by a few more mbps ( 140 -160 ). Thats what the plan is. SSds are expensive, but If I can gain some boost by doing this, then whats the harm!
3.5" HDD's series 7200.12 have a latent speed read and write of 100mbps !! so you are not getting right speeds and thus your mobo controller is at fault !! sata chips on mobo's are not meant for RAID !! they are just there for advertisement and promotional writings !! only the new mobo's have good raid chips, when the world actually doesn't need them SSD's are not so expensive, ( well they maybe for me ) but not for you try a new generation ssd and you will be shouting on your roof !! So you are thinkijng that JD is a meatball and we all must try him
hehe... Bhai, the SB on my board, is ICH10R, designed specifically for setting up a RAID with your hard drives. Lets see, still gotta take some back ups before i experiment.

You can go for 64-bit, as your CPU does support 64-bit instruction set. Go for that and put in all the RAM you have. If you have time and are willing to take the risk, then go for the RAID, experiment and find out.
RAID is useless. Better get a decent SSD. Even a 40GB will do. The amount of performance gain you'll see would be beyond putting into words.
i dont see any harm in trying x64 as long as you are not shelling out money for anything. ssd might be a good spend but is honestly a low priority item the ram upgrade you get with 64 bit will certainly help. if nothing else, you can open more browser tabs.
have used the x64 in a much lower config of mine .. so that wont cause any issues i guess ... but i never seem to get whats the real benefit of a x64bit os other than the ram thing
For one thing, apps and games load faster when running on 64Bit OS providing they are made for 64bit environment.
