The camera in question: Panasonic Lumix DMC-SZ1

Well, I let the camera get exposed to rain water and it has gone kaput. Now I have tried following things

    1. Blow dried under the hand drier
    2. Exposed to sunlight
    3. Blowed air from mouth, LOL
    4. Put them in rice for a night.

the problem1. Menu button not working
    2. display and mode button not working
    3.Click picture button not working
    4. zoom button not working

    Still working
    1. on and off button
    2. picture mode and camera mode button
    3. timer and flash button

However camera is set in some odd mode which doesn't let me take the picture.
Seems like there are no optical damage but control circuitry is damaged or need to cleaned or whatever.
    Any suggestions/remedies would be appreciated

Get rubbing alcohol. Open the camera and wash it thoroughly with the alcohol.

Second option is to get electro contact cleaner. Spray can. Spray liberally around the buttons or Where the buttons are on the circuit. Will clean and remove water and moisture.

Is it of any consequence that this even happened on Monday?

Not really. as long as it's not corroded and besides you have already tried drying it. Give it a shot. Contact cleaner comes handy in many places. ( Head phone jacks, pins, ports, USB ports, HDMI, etc)

I basically used it with contact cleaning liquid couple of time, kept it in front of heater and reset the software
    so it is working now.
